Here are some points to consider before you open your wallet – before and during spring break:

• Book With the Hotel Directly

There are a number of companies that are dedicated to student travel. These companies may advertise on your college campus by posting flyers or setting up booths. Booking with these companies consist of you paying a middle-man fee. Booking directly with the hotel, however, means you’re cutting that middle-man fee out. Most hotels offer the opportunity to book online via their electronic booking agent – so all you really need is a credit card and you’re set!

• Budget Accordingly

Take a realistic look at your finances to determine how much money you can afford to spend on Spring Break. When considering your budget it is important to prepare for the unexpected, so assume everything will cost ten percent more than you expect it to. Bring a cooler along and shop for food that’s ready to eat (or that you can easily cook) at grocery stores. Gildan Activewear is providing 30,000 high quality shirts which will have a unique Spring Break themed design on the back, along with eight other additional sponsors’ logos. The TDC’s logo will be placed on the front of the shirt.

The souvenir shirts will be given away free during the month of March to students as a thank you for continuing to make Panama City Beach the “Spring Break Capital of the World”. The shirts will be available at multiple locations, including hotel lobbies, clubs, events, and on the beach.

“Spring Break and free T-shirts have been synonymous with each other for decades,” said Carm Giardina, a representative of Collegiate Marketing Group – the agency not only tasked with co-producing the project, but also managing the promotion of it. “It’s the one souvenir spring breakers expect to come home with – a badge of honor proving they attended the number one student party of the year.”

Social Media Hub Will Once Again Promote a Fun, Exciting, and Safe Spring Break

Spring Break 2013 in Panama City Beach, FL will once again host a Social Media Command Center which will be managed and operated by Youth Marketing and Communications Agency Collegiate Marketing Group (CMG).

Last year, CMG introduced the idea and will again assemble its team to be spread throughout designated areas in Panama City Beach in order to not only monitor the digital fan conversation but to also act as a personal concierge service to students, in real-time, looking for some much needed area information.

It’s not a simple operation. The command center will run 15-17 hours per day, seven days a week, and will utilize multiple mobile devices and stationed computers to provide its services.

“Last year’s operation was something new and exciting and we weren’t sure how it was going to work out,” commented Carm Giardina, a representative of CMG. “By the time we were mid way through Spring Break it had already been declared a ‘massive success’. There is definitely a growing demand for this service.”

In upwards of 500,000 students are expected to hit the World’s Most Beautiful Beaches over a six week period – more people than any other Spring Break destination, domestic or foreign. Using the official Spring Break in Panama City Beach Twitter and Facebook accounts as primary social tools, CMG’s team estimates it will communicate with approximately six percent of this year’s Spring Break population.

“Social media is how we interact now, especially students attending Spring Break,” said Giardina. “We feel it is absolutely necessary to continue to capitalize on this and take Spring Break to higher levels of social interaction.” Giardina also added that “Many students are visiting for the first time, and so, the necessity for informed communication will be front and center.”

The communication center will open March 2 and will run through April 7. In addition to responding to general questions such as directions to the hotel or shopping areas, the team will once again tweet regular updates regarding Spring Break events, provide information on Panama City Beach’s best attractions (both daytime and nighttime), and will of course be on stand-by to direct people in case of an emergency situation.

“Spring Break has become such an exciting event – not to mention very highly anticipated – and we want to ensure that everyone’s stay is fun, safe, and informative,” continued Giardina. “In a way, through doing this, we’re building on customer service by keeping students informed and under control.”

Specific twitter hashtags (listed below) will help the social media team identify students in need of help. For example, saying “Where is the closest Walmart?” and including the hashtag #PCB2013 will automatically be picked up on and will generate a timely response. Of course, direct messaging @springbreakpcb is always going to work best as that is the official twitter handle of Spring Break in Panama City Beach.

Facebook messages will also be answered, however the team is recommending that students follow the official twitter account and communicate via tweets and direct messages to promote efficiency.

“We will be using Facebook more for posting pictures of daily events and activities, and of course, to show off this absolutely gorgeous destination to all our fans,” said Giardina.

The official Facebook fan page for Spring Break in Panama City Beach has amassed nearly 85,000 ‘likes’ to date, and is steadily increasing. Giardina says “We have more Facebook fans than any other dedicated Spring Break fan page by far. Therefore, we have a responsibility to feed our fan base the information they crave and to direct traffic to the official Panama City Beach Spring Break website, which will be visited by a record amount of students this year.”

Giardina concluded by saying that “A big part of our mission is to build on what we accomplished last year and continue to be the benchmark that future events and programs can learn from.”
